Happy Birthday to me! 38 years, wow...when did that happen? I’m filled with gratitude and blessings. Asé Tamla
In general, I think about purpose a lot. My own purpose, the purpose of others and our purpose on this planet. I regularly remind and encourage my students to think about and explore their purpose, as well. Recently, after learning about Chadwick Boseman’s passing my social media fields were full of his messages, his wisdom. I watched and rewatched, listened and re-listened to his Howard University Homecoming Speech. His words were simple, true and resonated with my whole being.
Over half the year has passed and it has been quite interesting to say the least. Despite my city finally entering Phase 3, Covid-19 still has a grip on most of my life and much of the world. Lockdown life began for me over 4 months ago and for the most part, I’m used to it now. I live in a home with 4 generations so I never lack company.
Looking back, I wonder if my impending sense of doom that NYE night was foreshadowing for the months to come. A warning that single motherhood was in my future. A warning that life as I know it was going to change forever. A warning that change is the only thing I can rely on, and that it is up to me to reflect and pay attention to the changes that occur in and around my life. How do they make me feel? How do they make me want to feel?
Would you still be celebrating if I told you that increasing numbers of BIPoC students were entering high school being unable to read and write?
Many of us who are excited about the ‘back-to-basics’ aspect of the curriculum are relieved and looking forward to something that is hopefully more straightforward than the current system. Certainly, many think it’s the hardcore drilling of math skills that is going to benefit our students’ achievements in math. However, there’s so much data, so many lived experiences with math proving that the drilling and rote learning method doesn’t work for a lot of our students. It’s actually quite detrimental. This finding is why changes were made in math education to begin with.
We've experienced drastic change in our way of life, there's a lot going on and it's an overwhelming time for many people everywhere, without the stress of schooling. Education matters. Schooling matters. Of course it matters! But in the midst of a global pandemic where the entire world has 'shut down' and 91% of the world's children are NOT in school, my sentiments remain the same. We need to chill out and stop further stressing out ourselves, and others. We need to chill out and stop further stressing out ourselves, and others. Stop getting mad at teachers, stop getting mad at kids. Stop getting mad. Just, stop.
Once again, I didn't make it to the grocery store. I didn't even look up recipes for inspiration....
Determined not to spend another cent on restaurant food, I opted to make a Slowcooker Lentil Curry Surprise. We have very early starts to our days, and there simply isn't enough time for my slow-poke self to cook in the mornings or evenings, while tending to a two year old. I don't have those super powers yet. With that, this Slowcooker Lentil Curry Surprise was being cooked overnight.
